Hip-Hop Leaders World Conference for PEACE: August 16th at UCLA

•August 14, 2008 • No Comments

My homie Omer Saar of UniverSOUL Productions is involved with an extremely dope event for a very Good cause….

The Hip-Hop Leaders (HHL) Program is a year-round after-school college prep, technology prep, and mentoring program.  The program uses the excitement and relevance of the hip hop culture and now skateboarding to connect with at-risk youth, then motivate and enable them to pursue higher education and technology careers.

Here’s a word from Omer….

UniverSOUL Productions has been working very closely with the Hip Hop Leaders program over the past 9 months to help develop the program, add value through strategic partnerships (MySpace, Oakley, Alphanumeric, Timberland, Fusicology, A-Side Worldwide, Robustflavor.com, Imeem, DC Shoes, Ubiquity Records, and several online publications), and ultimately help these at-risk youth the best we can. UniverSOUL Productions has also integrated skateboarding and art into the curriculum as added ways to connect with the youth and educate them in life skills and culture.

The event is this Saturday at UCLA’s Royce Hall.  Peep UniverSOUL Productions for more detailed info.

Helios Grill: Grill with the Sun

•August 11, 2008 • No Comments

Just had a barbeque yesterday, which was off the chain eventhough it rained on and off.  This joint probably wouldn’t have worked very well with the clouds, but its still fresh…

As long as this is affordable (I couldn’t find a price), this is dope…

The Helios Grill, created by Sean McGreevu, uses the sun to do the cooking. You won’t have to fork out a pile of coals and wait for them to burn and you will also perhaps be dealing with a less smokier experience. The device uses a solar dish that’s pointed directly at the sun and takes its rays to heat the grill on the opposite side.

BMW X6 Hybrid 2010 - sneak peak

•August 9, 2008 • No Comments

Here’s a sneak peak at the 2010 BMW X6 hybrid, they were recently testing in California.  I’m currently on the hybrid search making it my full intention to be driving one (not necessarily this one) within the next year.

The price tag is a bit high, but it’s still…

Weeds Goes Green: Season 3 DVD’s

•August 8, 2008 • No Comments

I don’t watch much TV, but the few episodes I saw of Weeds, I did really enjoy.  I mainly wanted to post this because 1) I thought it was All Good that they produced the DVD’s with the environment in mind, and 2) it gave me a reason to post my group’s version of the Weeds theme song done by our own DJ Haircut

I found the Weeds story of Tree Hugger

“The trays are made of 100 percent recycled materials and each tray can be recycled. Additionally, the paper used for the DVD packaging is made from 100 percent recycled fibers and is recyclable and compostable.

The greener packaging does follow eco design principles by using recycled and recyclable materials and also by making it easy to dismantle. If you do decide to recycle the DVD case (not sure if that actually happens) you can easily pop the plastic trays out to separate it from the paper component, making it easy to separate and throw in the recycle bins.

Lionsgate tells us that by using 100 percent recycled water bottles for the trays on the initial production run of Weeds Season Three , approximately 500,000 water bottles were prevented from ending up in the landfill. And to top that all off they say that the recycled tray uses less than 10 percent of the energy to make one from virgin materials.”

LOL: The Shit Box

•August 7, 2008 • No Comments

This is the ’shit’….

Yo, this is for my campers, hippy-fest-concert-goers, and my hobo homies who hop trains cross-country for fun.  I thought this was pretty funny.  Via Tree Hugger

The eponymously named Brown Corporation makes this “lightweight portable cardboard toilet, made specifically for outdoor use. The concept is simple the box pops up from its convenient 14” flat pack to a rigid reusable box, you pop in a degradable poo bag, do you business, seal and dispose of (responsibly of course!), and off you go.”

It was developed by fashion retailer Richard Wharton who had to make one too many trips to the loo at the Glastonbury Festival, and wanted a private, non-chemical john that could be used for rock concerts, camping, building sites, fishing, travelling and kids caught short.

It is all made out of recycled cardboard (don’t use it in the rain) and even the poo bags contain “P-Life™ additive which enables the bag to harmlessly degrade to water and CO2 over a fixed period of time.”

Think And Grow Rich

•August 7, 2008 • 1 Comment

Thought I’d share this PDF version of the classic book “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill.  This is one of the best selling books of all time.  It’s the OG book about the law of attraction, from which The Secret got all it’s ’secrets’.  Haha, actaully the law of attraction is ancient knowledge, but ‘Think and Grow Rich’ was still ahead of it’s time.  Download…

LA bans fast food in South Los Angeles

•August 4, 2008 • No Comments

I heard from a homie the other day that the City of LA banned the opening of any new fastfood restaurants on Crenshaw Blvd, but apparently the initiative includes all of South Los Angeles, according to the Associated Press and as seen in an article I found on Global Grind.  Read the full article here.

Here’s a segment about it I found on youtube.  At the end of the LA portion of the segment, there’s a quick peice about fast food in Japan…

It’s an interesting debate, but no fast food = ALL Good by me.

Hip-Hop is doing Good: Russell Simmons

•August 3, 2008 • No Comments

In this reoccurring segment “Hip-Hop is doing Good” I’ll be honoring Hip-Hop celebrities who consistently do Good.

I want to focus on “celebrities” because they are generally the ones who have created the most wealth for themselves, and therefore have gained a lot of power.  In my personal opinion, fame and wealth = power; a certain level of power that can be used to reach extreme levels of ”doing Good”.  This is not to say you can’t reach great levels of “doing Good” without fame and/or wealth; I’m just saying we need to realize the ridiculous amounts of Good that can be done if you DO have fame and wealth; or even one or the other for that matter.  (Side note: this is not to say celebrity/fame = success.  There are many levels of success, which depends on your personal definition of it.)

I believe that most hip-hop celebrities do a ton of Good with their money and fame, but either it isn’t common knowledge because mainstream media would rather report on the negative side of hip-hop, or there isn’t enough Good being done in hip-hop or by hip-hop.  Also - hip-hop celebrities are constantly fighting an uphill battle with the media, which always trying to crush us.  They didn’t know we can’t be stopped.  Let’s focus on the Good, shall we…

Russell Simmons is All Good in my book.  More heads need to be doing Yoga - for real. haha.  Russell is involved in several charitable organizations, at least two of which he is co-chairman and/or founded.  He’s heavily involved in politics, lobbying for Good.  Most of y’all already know the Good that Russell does, so let this just serve as a reminder.

I’m not gonna go into details on these “Hip-Hop is doing Good” posts, they’re gonna be quick and to the point, hopefully pushing us to read up on cats ourselves.  Peep Russell Simmons philanthropy and activism efforts on wikipedia.

All Good.

Question: why is it considered “soft” in Hip-Hop to do Good?  That shit is wack to me.
